This gorgeous crab apple looks amazing in spring, when it’s laden with large clusters of blush-white, nectar-rich flowers. Then, in late summer and autumn, the display kicks off again as the golden-yellow fruits crowd along the stems. Harvest these to make jellies and jams – or leave them on the tree and watch the comings and goings of a wide range of wildlife that will come for a snack. A wonderfully showy addition to the ornamental garden, it’s also a valuable addition to the allotment or kitchen garden where it can be used as a pollinating partner for both cooking or eating apples.
Garden care: Bare-root plants should be planted out as soon as they arrive. If this is not possible, they can be heeled in temporarily (covering their roots with soil) or potted up. Before planting, soak the rootball in a bucket of water for half an hour and make sure to incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole. Stake firmly in exposed positions. Remove dead, diseased and crossing branches while the tree is dormant.
