With its vase-shaped form adorned in puffy pink blooms, Prunus × blireana puts on a spectacular spring floral display. This small ornamental cherry tree unveils abundant clusters of large, semi-double light pink flowers that emit a delicate, sweet fragrance at the same time the emerging purple-bronze foliage unfurls, providing a striking contrast. The metallic-hued developing leaves mature to a deep green over the summer. Despite its ultimate small size, this compact Japanese cherry would make for a long season interest, ornamental focal point, perfect for small gardens.
Plant bare root trees as soon as conditions allow (avoiding frozen and waterlogged soil). When siting your ornamental cherry, select a spot that is sheltered from strong winds to protect the delicate blossoms. Stake your new tree to anchor it while the roots establish. Water thoroughly at planting and keep the soil moist for the first year by watering regularly, especially during hot, dry spells. After planting, maintain a weed-free area around the base of the tree, and use a tree guard if rabbits or deer are an issue. Prune in summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf and bacterial canker, cutting back any dead, diseased, or crossing branches.
