In spring, small, pendent clusters of rose pink, double flowers appear amongst the newly emerging foliage. This foliage is initially bronze, but quickly turns to a deep reddish-purple, making a delicious contrast to the flowers. A great tree for smaller gardens, it has a rounded habit with slightly spreading branches and the leaves will colour up nicely in autumn. In winter, after all the leaves have fallen, the peeling copper-red bark will provide further interest.
- Garden care: Plant ‘Royal Burgundy’ as soon as conditions allow (avoiding frozen and waterlogged soil). Choose a sheltered spot to protect emerging blossom. Incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly. Prune in summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf and bacterial canker.
