Prized for its striking mahogany-hued bark, Prunus ‘Branklyn’ delivers year-round ornamental appeal. This small, vase-shaped cherry tree reveals deep reddish-brown peeling bark that glistens through the seasons, providing winter interest and contrast to the green summer foliage. Though subtle compared to its shiny bark, clusters of petite white flowers bloom along the graceful branches in mid-spring, and the long, willow-like leaves emerge as a fresh green before turning golden yellow in October. Come autumn, small ornamental fruits appear for an additional seasonal showcase.
Plant as soon as conditions allow (avoiding frozen and waterlogged soil). When siting your ornamental cherry, select a spot that is sheltered from strong winds to protect the delicate blossoms. Stake your new tree to anchor it while the roots establish. Water thoroughly at planting and keep the soil moist for the first year by watering regularly, especially during hot, dry spells. After planting, maintain a weed-free area around the base of the tree, and use a tree guard if rabbits or deer are an issue. Prune in summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf and bacterial canker, cutting back any dead, diseased, or crossing branches.
